What Are We Going to do with all this Trash?
Keeping the Windward side clean is incredible important for our future, just like it is for all parts of the island particularly the rural areas that receive so much illegal dumping.
Cleaning up the windward side to send the trash to the leeward side is on a collision course with Waianae interest and the issue of garbage eclipses transportation as a challenge needing innovative answers.
The landfill on the leeward side is filling up just as the Kailua landfill did 23 years ago.
The landfill approach will always reach a dead end and Oahu and we need to be looking ahead for new innovations.
The only foreseeable long term answer to replace the landfills is burning garbage at such high temperatures, it doesn’t just incinerate, it gasifies.
Such high temperature systems are generated using plasma arc that render waste material into a usable inert gas and a glass like slag that has potential reuse as construction material.
Plasma arc at sufficient temperatures can burn concrete.
Right now a plasma arc system built by Pyro Genesis is being used on the new Ford class aircraft carriers.
To clean up the windward side and keep it that way requires a waste disposal system that, to the greatest extent possible, has a built in financial incentive to sweep up trash island wide
